AI - A School Teachers New Best Friend?

A pilot programme could change how primary schools in the Liverpool City Region operate.

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has introduced an AI pilot across schools in the region to enhance educational standards.

The pilot gives primary schools access to advanced technology developed by CENTURY Tech, used by many of the country’s private schools. CENTURY Tech says the technology personalises learning for every student and equips teachers with insights into knowledge gaps, helping them to identify the strategies for intervention.

The pilot scheme is part of a deal struck between technology company Century Tech and Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram.

The Century platform promises individual tuition with questions hand-picked for each student.

Mr Rotheram said he hoped the deal would help improve chances for students in a city where educational attainment for young people lags behind other areas.

CENTURY has been developed by an award-winning team of experienced teachers, neuroscientists and technologists.Together, they have combined the latest research in learning science, artificial intelligence and neuroscience to ensure CENTURY is underpinned by evidence-based scientific and pedagogical techniques.

Priya Lakhani, founder and chief executive of Century, Barrister and entrepreneur, Priya founded CENTURY in 2013 after being struck by underachievement rates in schools. A frequent keynote speaker and media commentator, Priya is also a co-founder of The Institute for Ethical AI in Education.

The tool offered teachers the chance to identify where gaps in skills are.

"That is impossible to do as one human being, one teacher in the classroom with 25 to 35 children without the technology,"

In April 2024, I had the opportunity to meet Mayor Steve Rotheram as he was planning his re-election campaign. What struck me was his understanding of technology and its potential to improve education in Liverpool, a key focus in his upcoming manifesto. As someone who has spent years in education and worked on developing CENTURY’s content and partnership model, I was excited to see how we could help address some of the challenges facing Liverpool’s schools.
