Elon Musk took a 9.2% stake in Twitter Inc. to become the platform’s biggest shareholder, a week after hinting he might shake up the social media industry.
Twitter shares surged as much as 26% after Musk’s purchase was revealed Monday in a regulatory filing.
Musk's move comes close on the heels of his tweet that he was giving a "serious thought" to building a new social media platform, while questioning Twitter's commitment to free speech.
Musk in the past has suggested there should be a way to identify bots and troll army on Twitter.
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey holds a 2.25% stake.
