The CEO of Canadian cryptocurrency firm WonderFi was kidnapped and held for ransom on Wednesday, according to CBC.
Dean Skurka was reportedly shoved into a vehicle in downtown Toronto during rush hour, only to be released uninjured after electronically sending $1 million (presumably CAD) to his captors.
According to Toronto Police, Skurka was forced into a vehicle by suspects who demanded a $1 million ransom. Fortunately, he was later found unharmed in Centennial Park, Etobicoke, after the ransom was paid electronically.
Skurka later confirmed the incident to CBC Toronto, stating,
“The safety and security of all of WonderFi’s employees are paramount. Client funds and data remain safe, and were not impacted by this incident.”
This kidnapping is part of a growing trend in which criminals target individuals involved in cryptocurrency for ransom. Jameson Lopp, a security expert, notes that this is the 171st known case of physical violence being used to steal cryptocurrency.
However, Dean Skurka was eventually released uninjured in Centennial Park, Etobicoke, after paying the ransom amount of $1 million. Toronto Police confirmed the details of the kidnapping but have not disclosed further information as the investigation remains ongoing.
Meanwhile, following his release, Skurka issued a statement assuring the public and his employees that WonderFi’s client funds and data were not compromised. He emphasized the company’s commitment to the safety of its staff and assets, adding that his personal ordeal did not impact the company’s operations.
