Riyadh, September 25, 2022: Saudi Arabia is participating in the Plenipotentiary Conference (PP22) of the International Telecommunication’s Union (ITU), which will be held in Bucharest, Romania, from September 26 to October 14. The Kingdom will be represented by H.E. Eng. Abdullah bin Amer Alswaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Saud AlTamimi, Governor of Communications and Information Technology Commission.
The Kingdom will take a leading role in the conference through its responsibility for several important files, foremost of which is the formulation of the strategic and financial plan for the Union, the discussion of international public policies for the Internet, and the role of the Union in this subject. Other key briefs held by Saudi Arabia are the issues of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of things (IoT), as well as the convening of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum.
The Kingdom is one of the most important member states in the ITU Council due to its international and regional leadership position. It has played an active role in creating international consensus, is the sixth largest financial contributor to the Union’s budget, and has a long history of supporting partnerships and cooperative work with other member states in building the union’s present and paving the way for its future.
The Plenipotentiary Conference is the ITU’s highest policy-making body and is staged every four years to formulate the strategic and financial plans, set the general policies and establish the future direction of the organization.
