Israel is home to over 200 beauty-tech companies, and the industry has raised over $500 million in funding since 2015. This is in part due to Israel's strengths in technology and entrepreneurship, as well as the global demand for innovative beauty products and services.

Beauty-tech is a rapidly growing trend that everyone in the beauty industry is talking about, but the term can be confusing. What does beauty-tech include and exclude? What does the industry mean when talking about it? At its core, beauty-tech is the intersection of the beauty industry and technology, and it encompasses a wide range of products and services. In Israel, the beauty-tech industry is at the forefront of innovation, with many startups focused on developing groundbreaking solutions for consumers. At Tech It Forward, we have been working in the field of beauty-tech for years, creating innovation projects between international corporations and Israeli startups from the Israeli ecosystem. These corporations include Avon, Natura, L'Oreal, Boticario, and Cartier Women's Initiative. Through our work, we have seen firsthand the incredible potential of beauty-tech and the impact it can have on people's lives. Defining Beauty-tech Beauty-tech is a broad category that includes many subcategories. Some of the most common subcategories of beauty-tech include:

  • Skincare technology: devices, products and apps that help users track and improve their skincare routine. This includes tools and devices that use technology to analyze and improve skin health, such as skin scanners, smart skincare devices, biotechnologies and AI-powered skincare recommendations.

  • Virtual try-on technology: This includes apps and tools that allow consumers to virtually try on makeup, hair colors, and even clothing using augmented reality or virtual reality technology.

  • Hair technology: products and devices that help with hair care and styling, such as smart hairbrushes or personalized hair products

  • Makeup technology: devices and apps that help with makeup application or provide personalized makeup recommendations. This also includes products and tools that use technology to improve makeup application and customization, such as 3D-printed makeup, smart makeup brushes, and AI-powered makeup recommendations.

  • Personalized beauty technology: AI-powered tools that provide customized beauty recommendations based on genetics, skin type, preferences, microbiology and more. This includes products and tools that use research, data and technology to offer personalized beauty solutions, such as AI-powered beauty routines, customized skincare products, and personalized makeup recommendations.

  • Beauty eCommerce: This includes online marketplaces and platforms that offer a range of beauty products, as well as tools that use technology to enhance the shopping experience, such as chatbots, virtual consultations, and personalized recommendations.

  • Sustainability: products and packaging that are eco-friendly and sustainable. For example, some beauty-tech startups are developing refillable packaging systems for beauty products, while others are using biodegradable materials in their products. There are also tools that use AI and machine learning to help companies reduce their carbon footprint and become more environmentally sustainable.

  • Longevity: Longevity beauty-tech includes products and tools that use technology to slow down the aging process, promote healthy aging, and enhance longevity. This includes anti-aging skincare devices, supplements, and other products that use technology to boost collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Marketing and advertising tech: AI and data-driven tools that help beauty brands target and engage with their audience more effectively

  • Wellness Technology: This includes tools, apps and devices that use technology to promote overall health and wellness, such as smart water bottles, sleep tracking apps, and stress-reducing devices, mental-health tools, which can have an impact on the overall health of skin, hair, and nails.

  • Materials Science and Molecular Research: New materials such as graphene, silk, and collagen are being used to create products that are more effective and longer-lasting, while new molecules such as peptides, stem cells, and retinoids are being used to address specific skin concerns. These advances in materials science and molecular research are enabling the development of new products and formulations that are more potent, more precise, and more targeted than ever before. As Israel continues to be a hotbed of beauty-tech innovation, we can expect to see even more breakthroughs in materials science and molecular research in the years ahead.
